The first heroic-tragic opera by M. I. Glinka, premiered on 27 November 1836, at the Bolshoi Theatre in St. Petersburg. Prior to the October Revolution the opera had been staged with the text written by baron Rozen and had the title "A Life for the Tsar." In 1939, when S. Gorodetsky wrote a new version of the libretto, the opera reappeared under the title which Glinka intended to use.
